With Hidden Noise
Marcel Duchamp’s With Hidden Noise (1916) is one of his most enigmatic readymades: a ball of twine clamped between two brass plates, with a small unseen object sealed inside that rattles when the work is moved. That rattling object has never been securely identified, and that uncertainty is part of the work’s force.
In this reading, however, the piece is not just a general puzzle. It acts as a shared container for a secret held within a very specific circle: Duchamp, Walter Arensberg, and the journalist Sophie Treadwell. The inscription links Sophie and Marcel across the span from Easter 1916 to December 31, 1916, and the work existed in three copies—one for Arensberg, one for Duchamp, and one for Treadwell—so the readymade appears less like a solitary object than a common riddle circulating among three people.
This matters because it turns the hidden object into more than a random noisemaker. Within the larger network surrounding Tulip Hysteria Co-ordinating, the work is read as binding together several recurring motifs at once: string, concealment, secrecy, and the pearl. The central suggestion is that the concealed object may be a pearl, which would make the ball of twine a literal and symbolic compression of the phrase “a string of pearls.”
What makes that possibility compelling is not simply the appeal of solving a mystery object. The phrase “a string of pearls” already resonates across the wider system: in the pearl motif associated with Tulip Hysteria Co-ordinating, in the association developed around Sophie Treadwell, who later writes a play called
“A String of Pearls”, and later in Man Ray’s A String of Pearls photo in 391. If With Hidden Noise encloses a pearl, then the work becomes a compact enactment of that logic: string wound around a single hidden center, a visible surface organized around an invisible core.
That structure closely matches the larger argument of the surrounding works. Again and again, a visible object carries an unseen meaning; what looks casual or indifferent conceals something specific, private, and highly charged. In that sense, With Hidden Noise is not only a readymade with a secret inside it, but a model of the system itself.
